Musique Electronique Inédite du Clavier des Mothers Of Invention

Via Sub Rosa: On pourrait difficilement ne pas voir dans Don Preston un "musicien clé" dans l'œuvre de Frank Zappa. Il n'est pas seulement cela, mais sa présence a marqué les enregistrements des Mothers de 1966 à 1974. Sa touche était déjà présente avant l'arrivée de Ian Underwood, et elle a perduré après le départ de celui-ci. Vous vous souvenez tous de King Kong (sa magnificence, tel qu'interprété par Dom DeWild) issu de la seconde suite de l'album "Uncle Meat". Une certaine forme de jubilation émane de cette piste, grâce au style fluide de Preston et au ton légèrement astringent du synthétiseur Moog -  qui n'aura jamais vraiment sonné comme ça avant et après. Cela pourrait avoir à faire avec sa double formation depuis qu'il a travaillé avec Gil Evans et écouté intensément Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen et Tod Dockstader. Immergé dans la musique de jazz, Don invente des liens secrets avec la musique électronique naissante.

En milieu des années 60, Preston a commencé à développer un instrument électronique, en utilisant un synthétiseur fait maison et une série d'oscillateurs et des filtres. C'est sur cet instrument qu'il créera "Electronique" (1967), sa première pièce. Deux ans plus tard, il devient un ami proche de Robert Moog (78e anniversaire de sa naissance fêté sur Google récemment), et leurs discussions donnent naissance à un certain nombre d'applications en relation avec la souplesse de l'instrument. Aujourd'hui, vous ne pouvez pas parler du Mini-Moog sans penser à Preston. Bob Moog lui-même dira à propos de son solo sur Waka Jawaka: "C'est impossible: normalement vous ne pouvez pas faire cela sur un Moog !". Filtres, Oscillateurs et Enveloppes composent la face cachée de Don Preston:  celle d'un compositeur de musique purement électronique.

'Where the hell did that come from?' was likely the response from many on hearing The Mothers of Invention's debut album Freak Out upon its release in June 1966 -- a time when music was changing, but to a degree that hadn't yet hinted anything this bizarre was on the horizon. But once the freaks and the beautiful people had cottoned on to what Uncle Frank and his Merry Men were up to (despite the latter community often being the target for some of Zappa's most hilarious lampooning), the scene was set for a fanbase of the most dedicated variety to emerge and a respect from critics, musicians, performers and the intelligentsia almost unparalleled in the history of pop culture.

This film reviews the true story of The Mothers of Invention and the music they made uring the first incarnation of the band.
